I just love doing this Quiz! I have seen that a lot of my readers think that I must be a Food Genius, but unfortunately that is not true! I have been reading recipe books and foodie magazines for years. The last couple of years I have been reading food blogs. Every time I see something interesting I write this down and it is from these notes that I have started doing the food Quiz, many moons ago. I get most of the questions from everyday reads in food magazines and blogs!

I most enjoy reading the answers to these Quizzes, some spot on with loads of information and some spot-on with loads of humor!

1.      What does to butterfly means in culinary terms?

 A – To cut food (usually meat or seafood) leaving one side attached and to open it out like the wings of a butterfly. 

2. What are traditional peperonata’s main ingredients?

A- ‘Peperonata’ is the classic Italian dish made from peppers, onion, tomato and potatoes. Served warm or at room temperature. 

3. What is a whoopie pie?

A – A whoopie pie is a sweet baked item which is a cross between a soft biscuit, a cake and a pie. It is made up of two round pieces of cake-like biscuits (cookies) which are sandwiched together with a sweet, creamy filling. Other names given to these sweet delights have included hucklebucks, gobs and big fat Oreos. 

4. Mission, Manzanillo, Sevillano and Ascolano are varieties of which fruit?

A – Olives. 

5. What are traditional financier’s main ingredients and why are they called financiers?

a – A financier is a small French cake, often mistaken for a pastry. The financier is a light, moist  teacake similar to a sponge cake and usually contains almond flour or ground almonds, or almond flavoring. The basis of the cake itself is brown butter, egg whites, powdered sugar and flour. Financiers are often baked in shaped molds. The name “financier” is said to derive from the traditional rectangular mold, which resembles a bar of gold. Another theory says that the cake became popular in the financial district of Paris surrounding the former name of theParis stock exchange.

6. Where does lemongrass originate from?

A –India and Sri-Lanka. 

7. Where did Swiss rolls originate from and what are the main ingredients of a Swiss roll?

A – Swiss rolls do not originate from Switzerland. They are suspected to originate from Central Europe, probably Austrian-inspired. Different countries have different names for this cake – some called it Swiss rolls, some called it roulades, and some called it jelly rolls. But they are all the same – a thin sponge cake rolled up and served in circular slices, revealing a spiral pattern. Some spread the cake with whipped cream, some spread with butter cream and some simply spread it with jam (and hence the name “jelly rolls”). Swiss rolls are made with sponge cakes – and it only requires four to five ingredients. The main ingredients are eggs, sugar, flour and butter.  

8. How many “eyes” does a coconut have?

A – three. 

9. What is “crimini” more commonly known as?

A – Brown mushrooms. 

10. What is the cooking method that combines stewing, steaming and roasting called?

A – braising.

    Hey, I got the peppers right – well, sort-of! AND, I also guessed that Swiss Roll didn’t come from Switzerland. I suppose I shouldn’t have gone as far afield as Outer Mongolia, though …

    Olives are a fruit? I thought they were a … well, I didn’t really thought at all, to tell the truth!

    Thanks for the answers and it’s good to have some knowledge even though I will most probably remember Colonialist’s for ever and I am still giggling every time I think of it. LOL!
